Derek Bok Center: How to Speak - Lecture Tips

This video is a preview. The whole video is quite a bit longer. I found it very helpful, though it’s already outdated with the slides and all. The main principles still apply though… Here are my notes, a quick summary f the whole video’s contents:

How to start
- NO Joke!
- Promise
- Menu

The BIG 4
- Cycle material at least three times (herhaling)
- Verbal punctuation (signaalwoorden)
- Near Miss (wat is het net niet)
- Ask Questions (genoeg pauze geven! 5 sec)

Time and Place
- 10:30 beste tijd.
- Well lit hall
- Full hall
- Flat, not theatre-like

The Board
- Allows you to draw
- Target you can point at (je handen kwijt kunnen)

The Projector
- Do not read the slide
- Don’t use pointer
- Niet stukjes verbergen van slide, maar juist toevoegen

The Props
- Have to be meaningful

Style
- Develop own style
- Look and Adapt, do not copy
- It’s OK to be eccentric
- Story

How to Stop
- Do not thank the audience
- Joke
- Deliver the promise
- Ask for questions
- Saluting the audience
